• During the Samurai GameŽ what occurs?
As the Samurai GameŽ unfolds participants must cross a
psychological line and step into the unfamiliar world of the medieval Japanese
Samurai. From here players are challenged to engage with their teammates and
opponents as champions exercising resourcefulness, decisiveness, honor, dignity,
integrity, risk-taking, selfless service, respect, compassion and personal
commitment. Two teams form and face each other in a series of individual,
one-on-one contests. The pace is fast and unpredictable, and the outcomes are
highly uncertain. Every match is symbolic, and while involving no significant
physical contact, demands much in the way of centeredness and support.
Participants are encouraged to summon forth their “warrior” spirit to gain
personal control and act with courage and determination to prevail … or face
defeat.
• What is the recommended size of a program involving the Samurai
GameŽ and how long does the Samurai GameŽ take?
The length of the actual Samurai GameŽ is
approximately 8 hours. This includes introduction, establishment of context,
rules and role selection, formation of teams, meal break and contests. Because
the Game is experiential in nature and intense, a period of reflection (often
overnight) is highly recommended. A debrief session of from 1 to 2 hours is
also highly recommended involving The Dialogue Method. The “effects” of the
Game and lessons learned really only begin after the initial debrief is
complete. Most institutions, including colleges & universities, integrate
extended reflection periods including reflection writing. The minimum number of
participants is 16. The creator of The Samurai GameŽ advises against running a
program larger than 80. Ideal size is between 24 and 60 participants. Most
Samurai GameŽ programs take 1.5 to 2.5 days. Some training organizations
include the Game as part of a larger seminar experience.
